The concept is in response to BlankFor_ms’ soothing music created with cassette players and acoustic sounds. We were in inspired by the cassette tapes that he used to add texture over the ambient soundscape and the very distinct physical relationship analog music technology has with the sound it creates. For instance, the length, the tautness and the physical markings of the tape directly affects the frequency and texture of the sound it emits. We thought it would be interesting to create a “room size cassette player “ with tapes that people can manipulate inside the space. Maybe the “tapes” are fibre optic cables that indicate with light passing through it where the tape is being “read” and depending on the number of intersection points, where it is in the physical space and the tension of the tape at different points will create different sonic affects. We really like the idea of having a direct physical and spatial manifestation of the sound being created.
